A British newspaper wants to take its aggressive investigations global, but money is running out.

At eight-thirty on the morning of June 21st, Alan Rusbridger, the unflappable editor of theGuardian, Britain’s liberal daily, was in his office, absorbing a lecture from Jeremy Heywood, the Cabinet Secretary to Prime Minister David Cameron. Accompanying Heywood was Craig Oliver, Cameron’s director of communications. The deputy editor, Paul Johnson, joined them in Rusbridger’s office, overlooking the Regent’s Canal, which runs behind King’s Cross station, in North London. According to Rusbridger, Heywood told him, in a steely voice, “The Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, the Attorney General, and others in government are extremely concerned about what you’re doing.”

We all remember President Obama's smiling face, full of hope and trust, in his first campaign: "Yes, we can!" – we can get rid of the cynicism of the Bush era and bring justice and welfare to the American people. Now that the US continues its covert operations and expands its intelligence network, spying even on its allies, we can imagine protesters shouting at Obama: "How can you use drones for killing? How can you spy even on our allies?" Obama murmurs with a mockingly evil smile: "Yes, we can."

It has been revealed today, thanks to Edward Snowden, that Google and other US tech companies received millions of dollars from the NSA for their compliance with the PRISM mass surveillance system.

So just how close is Google to the US securitocracy? Back in 2011 I had a meeting with Eric Schmidt, the then Chairman of Google, who came out to see me with three other people while I was under house arrest. You might suppose that coming to see me was gesture that he and the other big boys at Google were secretly on our side: that they support what we at WikiLeaks are struggling for: justice, government transparency, and privacy for individuals. But that would be a false supposition. Their agenda was much more complex, and as we found out, was inextricable from that of the US State Department. Si la prison n’est qu’un rouage parmi d’autres de la pénalité contemporaine, son enceinte oppose encore, à l’émergence des subjectivités politiques, une opacité tenace. Vue depuis les cellules, elle demeure une chambre sourde où le discours des prisonniers, soigneusement invalidé, achoppe à traverser des murs. C’est qu’une chose est d’individualiser les détenus, autre chose de reconnaître les processus de subjectivation individuels et collectifs, entendus comme tentatives pour poser enfin, en première personne, ses propres problèmes. Quelles percées, aujourd’hui, pour une rationalité politique que le GIP avait rendue tangible ?
